Black Baza was designed to win against all competitors, whether poled or asymmetric, in all conditions and in all types of inshore and offshore racing. Jason Ker, one of the most successful designers in IRC history, created Black Baza’s design after nearly two years of intensive research, which drew on his super-computing capabilities in Valencia, Spain, and five years of Asian wind data.
Black Baza is Ker’s most advanced hull and the design was incorporated into his Ker 40+ boats that compete in the UK’s Fast Forties fleet. The boat is glass and foam infused epoxy. It was intentionally built without carbon (except on limited basis in some panels) to avoid severe rating penalties that could not be overcome with this length of boat competing against older, noncarbon boats. The cabin was carefully designed for access and headroom at no cost to performance. A watertight aft compartment (accessible from deck) was installed for safety.
The owners assembled a world class build team. The boat was built by McConaghy Boats, renown for building high performance race boats. Pure Engineering provided world class engineering input, with the optimum balance between strength for tough offshore racing and weight savings for light air inshore racing.
