The Gold Anchor Award Scheme provides a quality benchmark so boaters know what to expect from a marina, much like the hotel rating system. It is operated by The Yacht Harbour Association which is part of the British Marine Federation, and the scheme was launched in 1988 with participating marinas all over the world.
Marinas undergo a 3 stage process which includes an independent assessment of 120 different aspects of their services and facilities, they are then mystery shopped looking at customer services and first impressions and finally the existing berth holders are surveyed. This information is applied to a calculation which establishes the final rating.
Ratings can also be found in the Reeds Nautical Almanac – Marinas Guide and through the Royal Yachting Association.
